What this means

Gig platforms don't withhold taxes. Every dollar you earn is gross — before SE tax, federal income tax, and state income tax. The "set aside per $100 earned" number is your personal savings rate to stay current on taxes. Set that amount aside the moment each payment arrives.

If your gig income is over $400/year, you're required to file Schedule SE and pay self-employment tax. If you owe $1,000 or more, you should pay quarterly estimated taxes (Apr 15, Jun 16, Sep 15, Jan 15) to avoid underpayment penalties.

CFO Tip

For rideshare and delivery drivers, the IRS standard mileage rate for 2025 is $0.70/mile. Track every mile using an app (MileIQ, Stride) — it's your single largest deduction and most drivers dramatically undertrack it. At $0.70/mile, 20,000 annual miles = $14,000 deduction.

Frequently asked questions
Do gig workers have to pay self-employment tax?+
Yes. Any net self-employment income above $400 is subject to self-employment tax at 15.3% — covering Social Security and Medicare. Unlike W-2 employees who split this with their employer, gig workers pay both sides. On $30,000 of net gig income, this is approximately $4,239 in SE tax alone, before any federal or state income tax.
What can Uber and DoorDash drivers deduct on their taxes?+
The largest deduction for rideshare and delivery drivers is mileage — the 2025 standard mileage rate is $0.70 per mile. Keep a detailed mileage log or use a tracking app like MileIQ or Stride. Other deductible expenses include phone usage percentage, car washes, phone mounts, insulated bags for delivery drivers, and a portion of your phone bill. These deductions can significantly reduce your taxable income.
How much should gig workers set aside for taxes?+
A safe rule is to set aside 25-30% of every payment you receive. This covers self-employment tax (roughly 14-15% of net income after the deductible half adjustment) plus federal income tax and state income tax. Setting aside money immediately when you're paid prevents the painful experience of owing thousands at tax time with nothing to cover it.
Do I need to file taxes if my gig income is small?+
If your net self-employment income is $400 or more in a year, you are required to file a tax return and pay self-employment tax regardless of your total income. Many gig workers who assume they're too small to owe taxes are surprised to learn that the $400 threshold is much lower than the standard deduction threshold that applies to other income types.
What is a Schedule C and how does it work for gig workers?+
Schedule C is the IRS form where you report profit or loss from self-employment. You list your total gig income, subtract all legitimate business deductions, and the net profit flows to your Form 1040 where it's subject to both self-employment tax and income tax. Every gig platform that pays you $600 or more issues a 1099-NEC, but you owe tax on all net income even if you don't receive a 1099.
